We recently travelled down to Maclear in the Eastern Cape (you'll be foregiven for not immediately knowing where that is!). It's a tiny farming village about 3 hours from East London but is the perfect spot for a little rest and relaxation.

Although not much relaxation for us - we were down for a friend's wedding - a beautiful, rustic affair set on the family farm.

And if they partying all night didnt kill us, the heat and soaring temperatures sure did. Couldnt breathe it was so hot..

I was thinking of interesting, creative ways to wrap a friend of mine's birthday present this morning (I must admit part of it had to do with the fact that I had no wrapping paper at home!), and it got me thinking about Christmas. Too often, we just wander out to the shops, pick up any remotely decent-looking stick of wrapping paper, take it home and mindlessly wrap our presents.

Linked to my earlier blog post about taking the time to send out hand written cards this festive season, why not take some time out as well to creatively wrap your presents? The international campaign, Go Red For Women, presented by MasterCard, will have its inaugural South African show - the Little Red Dress - during its Style in the City at the V&A Waterfront, Cape Town from the 29 October to 1 November 2009.

This initiative, in support of the Heart and Stroke Foundation South Africa, will see eight South African designers each creating their own unique red dress, which will be worn by eight well-known South African female personalities on the runway during gala dinner on 29 October.

The dresses will be on auction on the night with a reserved minimum bid for each dress and all proceeds raised will benefit The Heart and Stroke Foundation South Africa. The dresses will then be put on display for the duration of MasterCard Style in the City to give all attendees an opportunity to view the beautiful designs, and how much was raised for the Foundation.

“The Go Red for Women initiative, symbolised by the little red dress, is an important platform for us to bring home the message of heart health to women in South Africa. Our collaboration with MasterCard will enable us to get our message across in a way that is close to women's hearts: fashion,” says Ashleigh Kuttner, programme director projects, Heart and Stroke Foundation South Africa.

Scarf Update

I am a big fan of scarves - winter or summer. During the colder months, I wear more thick-knit varieties, while in summer I indulge in light weight assortments. And because I wear them all year round, I like to experiment with different ways of wearing them so as to keep the novelty alive.

Here is a fresh way of tying a scarf. Try it the next time you wear one:

Place the scarf around your neck - evenly spaced on either side

Knot the scarf in the middle below your collar bone once

Then tie it into a bow - as if you were tying your shoelaces.

For whatever reason - I find the silhouette of a bird quite a lovely one. Im even contemplating getting a tattoo with this shape. Here is some of my inspiration, first of all, my little bird Kiff Oke (don't ask). We rescued him after a particularly nasty thunderstorm in Durban, and he's been a part of the family ever since.

I love Fridays - they bring with them the satisfaction of a knowing that you put in 5 days of hard graft, as well as the promise of a relaxing weekend ahead. This weekend I have family event after family event given that my sister is visiting from Australia (and I have a young cousin to doll up for a special dance tomorrow night) so this weekend should be good!

But just before I sign off for the weekend (and pop on the couch to paint my nails for this weekend's festivities) I thought that I would leave you with some beautiful pics.

I will be styling a 4 day shoot with Vodacom from Friday til next Wednesday. It has been the quickest photoshoot preparation in history. Called on Monday, briefed at pre-prod on Tuesday, Shooting on Friday til Wed. Managing over 30 models - each of whom need to be dressed from my wardrobe library. Shew.

In honour of the first day of spring, I cleaned out my wardrobe. Hidden in the dark recesses of my closet were things from millenia ago that simply needed to go... Belts were tossed in haphazardly into the back of the shelf and eventually looked like enraged snakes trying to get to freedom.

How to make your own hair accessories

This weekend was a relaxing one - I spent most of Saturday getting stuck into some awesome DIY goodies.

I'm sure you've all heard in the recent fashion media that hair accessories are going to be quite key this season - so instead of paying big bucks for cute pieces, why not fashion (scuse the pun) your own? Here's how:

You will need:

Elastic Band
Scissors
Needle and thread
Buttons

STEP 1: Cut a piece of elastic (in whatever thickness and colour you want) to fit around your head comfortably

STEP 2: Sew the 2 ends of the elastic band together

STEP 3: Now choose some of your favourite buttons and sew them onto the elastic band - I suggest sewing them to the seam on the band - that way you cover up this seam.

STEP 4: Show off your new headpiece!

Levi's GET RID OF YOUR JEANS FOR GOOD

I just received this press release from Levi Strauss:

That old pair of jeans at the back of your cupboard can now be given a second lease on life.

From the 27th July, consumers can bring their old jeans – any brand, colour, style or size, (as long as they are still wearable) to any Levi's® Store. For each pair donated, you will receive a voucher that entitles you to up to R200 off your purchase of a new pair of Levi's® jeans. The old pair will be donated to disadvantaged communities supported by Rocking the Daisies and Rocking the Gardens. What a win win situation, Levi's® jeans are given to those in need; you will have scored a great new pair while doing something good!

Q: From when does this promotion run?
A: The promotion starts on Monday 27 July, and will continue as long as voucher stocks last. We hope to run the promotion for at least 2 months, but this will depend on the response we get.

Q: Can I only bring Levi's® Jeans in for donation?
A: No. Any brand, colour, style or size of jeans are acceptable as long as they are still wearable.

Q: What does “wearable” mean?
A: Whether or not the jeans are considered wearable is at the discretion of the Levi's® Store manager, but here are some guidelines to consider when deciding what to donate:

Fly zips must in working order and no buttons that close the jeans may be missing.
Rips and repairs are acceptable as long as the top block & crotch of the jean is not ripped i.e. jeans can be worn without exposing underwear
Jeans should be clean i.e. washed (if the jeans have paint or other permanent marks on them, this is acceptable)
Shorts, ¾ capris and full length jeans are all acceptable – as long as they are denim
Frayed leg openings are acceptable

Q: Is this promotion only valid at Levi's® Stores?
A: Yes it is, though we will announce other collection points via the media from time to time. Your voucher can however only be redeemed at a Levi's® Store.

Q: Are you collecting jeans for men and women?
A: Yes we are.

Q: Can I also donate children’s jeans?
A: Yes you can. The same conditions apply that they must be wearable.

Q: Are only jeans being collected?
A: Yes, though shorts, ¾ capris and full length jeans are all acceptable – as long as they are denim.

Q: How many pairs of jeans may one customer donate?
A: You may donate as many pairs as you wish, as long as the store has enough vouchers on hand to honour your donation & can physically accept the donation in terms of storage space in store. Remember though that each voucher can only be redeemed against one pair of jeans purchased.

Q: If I hand in three pairs of jeans and get three vouchers, can I use them all when I buy one pair of new jeans?
